Getting started

Open Music MCP. It lives in the menu bar (the plug icon) and has no Dock icon.
Click the icon and choose Allow Apple Music.
Under Connect Your AI, click Copy Setup Prompt and paste it into your AI agent. The agent adds Music MCP to its own settings.
Ask your AI to play something, for example “something calm for a late evening”.

Common questions

Which AI apps work with Music MCP?

Any app that supports MCP servers (Model Context Protocol). Agents that can edit their own settings, such as coding agents, set themselves up from the setup prompt. For other apps, open Manual Setup, pick your app and click Copy Settings. If your app isn't listed, choose Other app (HTTP) or Other app (command).

Do I need an Apple Music subscription?

Yes, to play songs. Your AI can search the catalog without one, and the panel shows a note if your account can't play music.

Does it work with the browser or phone version of my AI?

No. Music MCP runs on your Mac and only accepts connections from it, so it works with AI apps that run on the same Mac.

Can my AI see my library?

Only if you turn on Share Library & History in the panel. Then your AI can read your songs, playlists and recently played music to pick music you like. It's off by default, and you can turn it off at any time.

Can my AI create playlists?

Yes, if you turn on Allow Library Changes in the panel. Then your AI can save a set as a playlist, add songs to your playlists, add music to your library, and love or dislike songs. It can't delete or rename anything. It's off by default.

Does music keep playing when I close my AI app?

Yes. Playback runs in Music MCP, not in your AI app. Quitting Music MCP stops it.

Troubleshooting

My AI says it can't reach Music MCP

Check that Music MCP is running: the plug icon is in the menu bar and the panel says Ready for your AI.
If you used Reset Access Token…, every AI app was disconnected. Paste the setup prompt, or the manual settings, into your AI apps again.
Restart your AI app, or reload its MCP servers, after changing its settings.

I can't find the icon in the menu bar

On Macs with a notch, icons that don't fit next to it are hidden. Quit a few other menu bar apps, or hold ⌘ and drag icons to make room. Also check that Music MCP is allowed in System Settings → Menu Bar.

“Allow Apple Music” doesn't work

If you denied access earlier, turn it on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Media & Apple Music.

My AI asks me to turn on sharing

Your AI tried to read your library or history while Share Library & History is off. Turn it on if you're happy to share, or ask for music without it.
